Magnolia takes 'Waltz' for a swing

'Take This Waltz'Magnolia Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to Sarah Polley's "Take This Waltz," which premiered last month at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival. Magnolia said it will release "Waltz," which Polley has written, directed and produced, in early summer. Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Luke Kirby and Sarah Silverman star in "Waltz," focusing on a young woman -- portrayed by Williams -- struggling to choose between a husband that she loves and another man that she has fallen passionately in love with. Magnolia announced the deal Monday with TF1 International. It plans to release the pic theatrically in all major U.S. markets, following a "prominent" film festival presence in regional fests. Magnolia will also release "Waltz" through its Ultra VOD program. "Waltz" is the fourth TIFF title picked up by Magnolia. It also acquired US rights to wilderness drama "The Hunter" and Michael Dowse's hockey comedy "Goon" along with worldwide rights to Bobcat Goldthwait's "God Bless America" for its genre arm, Magnet. Deal for "Waltz" was negotiated for Magnolia by senior VP of Acquisitions Dori Begley and head of legal and business affairs Chris Matson, with Gregory Chambet of TF1 Intl.
